More than is usual. One of the factors for not faithfully presenting the manga in anime is that of the Limited-time Syndrome. Most manga require long series to tell the whole story. With the short time span of an OAV or movie it becomes difficult to get enough screen-time to do justice to the original. MI, with its 96 episodes (22min each -> 2112min -> 35.2hours), has a decent quantity of screen-time. A fairly significant supporting character, Nikaido Nozomu, didn't appear at all in the anime. This meant that over five chapters of the manga had to be re-written without Nozomu, or were totally ignored. While the characters experienced more violence in the manga, they also had more titillating scenes. For instance, Godai breaks his leg twice in the manga, but during his stay in the hospital, Kyoko was really giving him some attention--she almost kissed him... twice! Kuroki was part of the Shiinomi Daycare staff in the manga only. In the anime it was suggested, but not shown, that Godai had sex with Kyoko. These scenes, however, can be found in the manga. The loon squad appears as a trio in the anime much more often than in the manga. Minor Differences: This chart goes in sequence, following the anime episodes. I just did this to test out the idea. ) I haven't read that many manga at all, so I don't know if other anime series have been more faithful to their original manga stories. So I wonder how good is the anime version of MI versus the original manga? In overall, the anime version left a greater impression on me and struck me as being the better of the two versions. Maybe that's because I saw more than two-thirds of the series before seeing a single page of the manga. However, that isn't to say that the manga doesn't better the anime in some parts. That's my initial impression. Maybe once I've read the whole manga I'll have changed my mind about which is better than the other. Or maybe I'll decide that it's useless to compare them in this way. A few concrete examples would be useful here: The manga chapter, "Inside a Well", was one of the chapters that clearly beats out the anime version, "Slapstick autumn fest. Inside a well with Kyoko-san". The anime turned what was a concise manga chapter into a drawn out and boring episode. For the anime, they doubled or even tripled some scenes (this got stale quickly), whereas the manga had those scenes appear only once. On the other hand, the designers of the anime had the hindsight of seeing the character designs for the entire manga before starting. So the initial character designs are much prettier than in the manga, as far as the early chapters are concerned. The characters are better looking in the first quarter of the anime series than in the manga. It's just as if the author had gone back and redone the drawings. By about volume 6 of the manga, both versions are equally good-looking. The writers for the anime were pretty good when it came to adding extra scenes. In many cases, their new scenes were as good, if not better, than what was originally in the manga. Takahashi-san does not have a monopoly on talent, whether in the humor or in the story-telling department. --------- .5.> Glenn Tarigan: Hehe, don't be too put off by my incessant gripings about Viz Comics. But it's too fun for me to quit. Jeff Williamson: *chuckle* I will gripe occasionally, too. Though with the latest issue (2.4) I was more impressed by the actual storyline (and its differences from the anime). Especially the end, where Kyoko cradles Godai's head in her lap... the scene in the anime also has her cradling Kentaro, reinforcing the feeling that Godai is looking for a "mother-substitute", which I think is a wrongful label to hang on the manga. The manga version has Kyoko treating Godai more like a lover than a child--especially when he's too unconscious to notice. ^_^ The anime seems more geared towards "pure" family audiences, toning down any *hint* of early relationship development. Sorry, I'm psychoanalyzing again. And ranting. Maison Ikkoku ML: What pisses me off in the manga/alsoVIZ is that Godai looks wierd...in comparison to the anime. I like the anime better because both Kozue and Godai look cuter! For some reason, Godai looks like a neurotic person. For Kozue, the extra cuteness factor makes me feel for the girl's discomfort, in eps38. Kyoko is suppose to be beautiful, and I can't see it any other way... (Okay, I'll give you that scene when she's arguing with her mom in their home.) I don't know how far Viz's translations have gotten, but I'm pretty sure they've stuck to the first couple volumes. The character designs change quite a bit during the series, and the anime was based on the designs from late in the manga. I personally think the first volume looks like late UY and the last looks like Ranma. :) Specifically, Godai seems to go from looking like a college-age Ataru to looking like a calm Ryouga. That is, the later stuff makes the early pages look rather crude. The cover painting is a good example of her later style. 2) As to whether the anime is better than the manga, it's not an easy question to answer. The few episodes not based on a manga story tend to lean towards the somber or quiet and not humor. For me they tend to smack too much of a single mood. The humor in the other original stories seemed to take the characters...out of character. The manga stories Takahashi wrote and drew that were not adapted were usually not too important to the overall plot, but this is not always the case. For example, a secondary character introduced halfway through the manga is left out of the TV series completely, but does show up in the Final movie. None of the first group of stories he featured in (about half a volume) were adapted. The final point is that even those stories that do show up in both anime and manga tend not to be straightforward adaptations. Something is usually changed...some of the changes I've seen in the anime tend to soften the blow Godai receives in the manga, or simply changes the mood the characters happen to be in. The biggest change in the last part of the anime series is in making two storylines run concurrently instead of sequentially as they originally did in the manga. For my own part since I consider the manga the original story source I tend to favor Takahashi's storytelling more often than not. But I think following both manga and anime will at least allow you to experience the entire story, no matter which version you prefer. The keyword to look for is "chapter_titles". @manga Basic Info on the Manga: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Art and Story by TAKAHASHI Rumiko Published by Shogakukan, under the Big Comic Spirits imprint. .7.> Publishing dates: Jack Dietz says: The first printings of the narrow-ban volumes 1 and 15 are May 1 1982 and July 1 1987. These normally come out within six months of the publication of the last story in the volume. Also, the beginning of v1c4 has the date SHOWA 56 NEN 1 GATSU 9 KA at the top corner of the first page. I believe that's the date that that story came out, Jan 9 1981. Wups, that doesn't make sense. I'm going to revise this to say 'one year in the past', making the current date the second week of January 1982. I'd wager that the series ran in Big Comic Spirits from the end of November 1980 to the beginning of 1987, and that she got a half year off to develop the character designs and storyline for Ramna 1/2 before starting it. The UY that I have has issue numbers for the first and last stories in each volume; they go from SHOWA 54 NEN 37 GO (1979 in September) to SHOWA 62 NEN 8 GO (1987 in February?) I think UY had a hiatus in there somewhere when Takahashi took a long vacation. At 26 episodes per year, there should be about 150 episodes total, taking a little over five years. That seems consistent. UY had 52 episodes per year, and my collection has 25 episodes per volume in 15 volumes, or about 375 episodes total, taking about six years; the running time above is around seven and a half, so it has some breaks in it. Yutaka Sasagawa says: The dates are all in the back of VW10. The very first chapter was on the November 1980 Big Comic Sprits, and the last chapter was on the April 20, 1987 Spirits. As you can see, the magazine started out monthly, but isn't at the end. If Takahashi-sensei hasn't missed any deadlines, or hasn't taken time off from MI (which it looks like she hasn't), then here's a quick rundown of how the magazine ran: Monthly: Nov. '80 - Jul. '81 Biweekly: Jul. 15 '81 - Mar. 30 '86 (Actually, it's the 15th and 30th of every month, not exactly two weeks.) Weekly: Apr. 14 '86 - Jul. 7 '86 Biweekly: Jul. 21 '86 - Dec. 8 '86 Weekly: Jan. 8 '87 - Apr. 20 '87 I guess that makes it a five and a half years run, for a total of 162 episodes, including the "Bangaihen". Jack: I stand corrected. All I know about the magazine is from a sales figure from the Mangajin article on manga, which listed BCS as a biweekly with a circulation of 1,200,000. Yutaka: BTW, anyone know anything about Big Comic Spirits? It's definitely not one of the best-selling magazines, and I don't think I've ever seen it. Jack: It's a seinen manga, which may not get sold over here as much. I believe I've seen it. The sales figure of 1,200,000 puts it at about 1/5 the circulation of Shonen Jump, but still significant compared to some of the smaller ones like Comp. <.7. Part 8 - Yagami's parents come home surprisingly early, which leaves Godai in a fix. Part 9 - Yotsuya becomes Yagami's tutor. After meeting Kyoko one last time Yagami disappears for good. -----------1986------------------------ Volume 12 ========= 1986.01.01 Part 1 - Mitaka is back. When Kyoko and Godai go to the shrine for the New Year's visit, Mitaka arrives to show off his new found tolerance for dogs, especially Souichiro. p4,1 - Caption: "New Year's Morning" Part 2 - As Mitaka goes to face down Asuna, his uncle tries to persuade Kyoko to forget about Shun. Part 3 - Godai's hopes to get a permanent job at the Shiinomi Nursery are dashed. Part 4 - Godai tries to cope with the loss of his job. Instead of telling Kyoko the truth, he settles into a new routine of taking her o-bentou. Part 5 - Sakamoto introduces Godai to a new job. The loon squad soon find out in time to extort him. Part 6 - Kyoko starts getting suspicious with Godai's constant late night absences. She doesn't find out the truth until the evidence is right in front of her nose. Part 7 - When they get back to Ikkoku-kan, Kyoko tells off Godai. A couple days later, they patch up. Part 8 - Mitaka thinks he's finally shaken off Asuna by telling her how he feels. 1986.04 Part 9 - Kyoko goes with her family and father-in-law to the annual grave visit. Mitaka and Godai are there in the background. Part 10 - The grave visit becomes an occasion for marriage discussion. Part 11 - Mitaka takes Kyoko (and Ichinose) to the tennis club. Asuna is introduced to Mitaka as a new club member. Part 12 - Mitaka goes back to the Kujou's to get rid of Asuna. That doesn't work. Meanwhile, Godai gets some undue attention from a Cabaret hostess. Volume 13 ========= Part 1 - As Godai settles in with his infant charges, Mitaka and Ms.Chigusa join forces. Part 7 - With exams coming up, Kyoko invites Godai to have dinner with her. Godai discovers that Asuna is about to be engaged to Mitaka, yet Mitaka is still chasing Kyoko. So Godai goes to visit Mitaka for a "chat". Part 8 - Godai sets a date with Mitaka, and misses his dinner with Kyoko. She's there to greet him when he arrives at the train station. Part 9 - Asuna goes to Mitaka's apartment, and stays overlong. Godai starts his first day of exams. Part 10 - The next day, Godai comes back to Ikkoku-kan, then announces he won't be coming back for a while. Mitaka traces Asuna to her retreat. Part 11 - Someone's pregnant! Mitaka's in shock. Volume 14 ========= Part 1 - Just after becoming engaged with Asuna, Mitaka discovers the doggy truth. Part 2 - Mitaka talks with Godai in the day. That night, Mitaka and family have dinner with Asuna. 1986.09 Part 3 - Kozue's coworker proposes to Kozue. 1986.09.23 Kyoko and Kozue end up going together to see Godai at the Bunny Cabaret. Kozue saw Akemi and Godai leaving a love hotel. Ichinose convinces Kyoko to come back to Ikkoku-kan. 1986.10.06 But on the way back, she's waylaid by Kozue, who Afternoon tells her the "truth". Part 10 - Kyoko's shaken by Kozue's bombshell. So she drops by ChaChaMaru before coming home. Akemi really helps. Early-Evening Godai and the other loons arrive and Kyoko lets him have it. Our lovebirds end up at a love hotel anyway. Evening Part 11 - Nikaido explains to Kozue that Godai was never unfaithful to her. Meanwhile, Godai is in bed with Kyoko, but having some anxieties to resolve... Volume 15 ========= Night Part 1 - In the evening, Godai and Kozue break up amiably. Part 2 - A few hours later, Godai and Kyoko sleep together. 1986.10.07 Kyoko says to Godai, "To tell you the truth, I've loved you for a long time." 1986.10.31 Part 3 - This morning, Godai is still giddy about that night with Kyoko. Now is the day that he finds out whether or not he passed his baby sitter qualification exam. Did he succeed?! (Yes.) In the evening, after a party at the Bunny Cabaret, he phones Kyoko and almost proposes to her. p46,1 - Exam Results Board: Showa 61 = 1986 v14c4 p77,7 - Godai says that his exam results will be displayed on Oct.31. 1986.11 Part 4 - The loons party continuously for about a week, celebrating Godai's exam success. For the next three nights, the loons' continued partying delays Godai yet again. The next day, Godai *really* promises to meet with Kyoko in the evening. He ends up arriving at her room at 3:55 in the morning. Part 5 - Godai has an interview at the Wakaba Daycare. Afterwards he and the other interviewee meet with Kyoko at a cafe. When they get back home, he gets a phone call and finds out that he didn't get the job. In the evening, Kuroki and Saotome visit. The next day, Godai visits the invalid principal. 1986.12 Part 6 - Kyoko visits her ill father. Meanwhile, Godai is at the daycare, and the topic of conversation turns to marriage. p114,3 - A poster announces something for Dec24th. That evening, Godai tries and fails to propose to Kyoko. Well, if and only if this is correct (someone please check this!), it describes what known in Japan as 'aki no yonaga' --> 'long night in fall/autumn'. For some reason, nighttime in fall seems long in Japan, and this just describes it. I'm starting to think the haiku is wrong somewhere, though. This is a chapter where Godai takes the entrance exam. Someone who knows the plot can maybe clarify this. Sylvain: As Godai watches the match between Mitaka and Kyoko, he had the pattern of the wire fence printed on his face. But I'm willing to bet that it has something to do with love or romance. Sylvain: Because everybody's using her phone, Kyoko decides to install an "aka- denwa" in Ikkoku-kan. In Japan, there are green phones, which can use both change and card, or card only, and there are pink phones, which use only change and that are found in many semi-private spots. The atmosphere's great, especially if it's a hot day, but starting to cool down in the evening, and there's a slight breeze. From here on is info that I've heard, since I'm still only 19. ^_- (legal drinking age in Japan is 20). They serve draft beer in huge mugs, it probably holds a little over a liter. From the places I've been to, uh, rather, from what I've heard, ^_- those big mugs of beer go for anywhere from 500-800 yen. Kinda expensive, but you're paying for the atmosphere also. And the beer tastes so great! Nothing like the regular canned or bottled stuff! Or so I've heard ^_-. They've even used train stations for beer gardens. She notices the pansies on Godai's kotatsu and TAKES IT DOWN TO HER ROOM to take care of it. You should see her face when Ichinose tells her that those flowers were a present from Kozue... So Kyoko gives geraniums to Godai when he comes back; and she gives him a whole BOOKLET of hanakotoba. If you notice, when you see the sign for Oomiya Station, in the platform, one side of 'the next station' is Kumagaya, but the other is left blank. This means the Jouetsu Shinkansen was pretty new back then, since it quickly went to Ueno Station after it was built. I don't think Oomiya was the 'shuuten', or the final stop for long. It now goes all the way to Tokyo Station, BTW. If I remember correctly, the Jouetsu Shinkansen started operation in late 1982, so I'm guessing this episode took place a little after that. But the people at Ikkoku-kan, as usual, have to come along. Glenn: To summarize the discussion below, this chapter title is a pun-- it can either mean "The People Concerned" or "Healing Bathers". Kanaya-sensei: If you look up in a dictionary, you will find that TOUJISHA written with the above kanjis doesn't exist. When referring to healing baths the term TOUJI-KYAKU (kyaku = customer) is preferred. The word TOUJISHA does exist, but it means "the person (party) concerned, interested (in a suit or an accident)". Tarigan: I wasn't sure what the above text meant, so I asked Sylvain to further clarify what the title should be. Sylvain-san: The appropriate reading, here, no doubt about it, is "TOUJISHAtachi". The kanjis for "TOUJI", here, mean (healing bath). With such kanjis, "TOUJI-KYAKU" (customer of healing bath) is the usual way to designate healing bathers, not "TOUJI-SHA" (person of healing bath). If they hear "TOUJI-SHA" without looking at the kanjis, japanese people will understand it as "people concerned". This is how Takahashi-san creates her puns. Yutaka: I think this is only part of some phrase, tho I can't recall what that phrase is. But the translations seems good. Ito Takayuki: The full sentence is "naka yoki koto ha utsukushiki kana" (lit. How beautiful being on good terms is). It's written in a certain simple drawing on which some vegetables are drawn, by...probably Mushanokouji Saneatsu (a great writer). The splash page is a parody of this drawing. I don't think it fits the story and the meaning goes waaaay off. ^_^; The title is an obvious play on the phrase (it's a phrase in Chinese) "shinkeikabin", which I would translate as "nerves over-sensitive". However, the "sensitive" part got changed. Hence, the reading with "bi" instead of "bin" becomes closer to "nerves over-worn". The title should be built on that basis, IMO. The two wait for Godai (who also doesn't have an umbrella) to return, and Kyoko and Kozue exchange notes on their first loves. Kozue finds out that Kyoko's a widow. Boy, Kyoko knows a lot about Godai. Must be because she's the kanrinin. Must also be the reason her skirt feels so tight on Kozue. Is that jealousy Godai feels for the dead Souichirou?] (Title page shows Kyoko looking outwards towards a stormy sky. Kozue is beside her, looking towards Godai with an arm on his left shoulder. In the end, the errant cat is found with Souichirou-san, but not before Kyoko has slept with Godai!?] Bror Hellman: A fan of Kanrinin-san? Wasn't he a fan of some star named Kyoko? And not the one we know? Bob: I stand corrected. I had assumed the anime was faithful to the manga on this point. Silly me.... (Title page shows Kyoko outside with Souichirou-san in front of his doghouse. Someone inside shouts, "Kyoko" and she responds, "hai.") v3,5 VW2,10 [Kyoko's parents want her to come home and marry again, and above all STOP WORKING AT IKKOKU-KAN! She really doesn't want to, though. We see that Kyoko can scream just like the best of otoko. She also sits like 'em. Hey, Godai's head gets a cheap feel! At the end, Kyoko's trying to thinks up with reasons for staying at Ikkoku-kan, and the loon squad shoots them all down with amazing accuracy and timing!] (Title page shows Kyoko, with an amused expression on her face, splitting the image of her father, sweating to the left, and her mother, looking at her from the right. Kyoko's carrying a tool box in her left hand, a hammer in her right.) Quote I won't let go: Kyoko: [small voice] are WATASHI no CHICHI desu. They go on a drinking binge, as if this isn't the same as usual, until Kyoko returns and tells them it's all a motherly-plot. Kyoko ends up stroking Godai's hair at the end, because his head is in her lap. Of course, he pays the price when her mother calls at that moment.] (Title page shows Kyoko looking, almost regretfully, back towards the tenants, who are looking at her in disbelief. Even Yotsuya's sweating. Actually, he's the only one sweating.) This episode was incredibly funny. Kudos to the animators, this time! Too many good quotes department: Ichinose: antara koko ha YOSE ja nai n da yo. Worker: YOSE yori omoshiree. Yotsuya: [shouting] GODAIkun ha KANRININsan wo onapetto ni shite iru--_. Godai: SOTO made KIkoeru mon ka. (Pity she's halfway down the stairs, Godai. And her expression gives her an uncanny resemblance to Lum. BTW, someone wanna explain "onapetto" to me. Kyoko: [hoarse] ee, chotto donarisugichatte ... v3,7 VW2,12 [Kyoko's mother tries to sucker Ichinose into helping her convince Kyoko to come home. Unfortunately, when Ichinose tries to talk to Kyoko, Kyoko's father is right there, utterly ruining Kyoko's mother's plan. Kentarou tells off Godai for being a wimp when it comes to Kyoko. (About time!)] (Title page shows Kyoko looking very sternly down at the tableau of Kyoko's mother and Ichinose sitting across a table. (Sorry Glenn, Sylvain; I couldn't resist. B-) Both the older women's heads are bowed, and Kyoko's mother is actually crying.) v3,8 VW2,13 [Kyoko visits Souichirou's grave with her parents and the elder Otonashi. (Did Kyoko have a mother-in-law?) Meanwhile, Kozue dupes Godai into meeting the family. Realizing that Kyoko will probably argue with her parents, Godai tries to be back in time to comfort her at the train station. (She actually argues with all three of them.) But the Chigusa clan are going full-tilt, and utterly ignore Godai, whose last words are "MAketa...." Waitasec, Godai, were you about to kiss Kozue?!] (Title page shows Kyoko in a spring-time dress looking reproachfully at her parents and her father-in-law, who are looking back at her. Meanwhile, the lower righthand corner of the page has been "torn," to reveal Godai being led off by a smiling, running Kozue. He's looking back at Kyoko.) v3,9 VW2,14 [Mitaka proposes to Kyoko right there on the courts! Well, in a roundabout way. Kyoko is apparently oblivious to the meaning, and says she can't "pair with Mitaka" because she's not sure if she can play tennis at the professional level. We find out that Godai actually knows how to hit the ball. We also find out that Ichinose knows next-to-nothing about tennis. Godai recognizes Kyoko's feelings for her dead husband, in front of Kyoko. Kudos!!] Glenn: This was quite a surprise for me, who watched the anime version before reading the manga-- in the anime, Kyoko was off by a window table and didn't hear a word of Godai's explanation. So in the manga, Godai tells Kyoko that he knows she's still in love with Souchirou?! Wow... (Title page shows Kyoko chasing down a hit tennis ball, while a split-screen shows Mitaka on top looking almost arrogantly down on Godai, who's staring right back at Mitaka. Coincidentally, the line connecting their eyes runs through Kyoko's miniskirt.) v3,10 VW2,15 [Kyoko has a beach date with Mitaka. He reiterates his proposal clearly, and she deflects, saying she can't respond right now. Mitaka says he can wait two or three years for her feelings to fade, while thinking he can overcome his dog-phobia in that time. Godai has another meal at the Nanao's, gobbling down the dinner 'cause he hasn't had a square in so long. He tells a returning Kyoko that he hopes she'll stay on as kanrinin for another 3 years (until he can graduate from college). But then he makes the mistake of telling the loon squad, who frighten him into reconsidering whether he can actually graduate in 3 years....] (This title page has a 3-way split. The main split is diagonal from near the upper righthand corner to the lower lefthand corner. There is a second split from this diagonal towards the middle of the lefthand side. In the top section, Kyoko's hugging Souichirou (the dog) in a field of INUs (kanji in circles). In the field below Kyoko, and on the lefthand side, is an upsidedown Mitaka shying away from Souichirou, also in a field of INUs (kanji in circles), except he's clearly in hell. Finally, the third section, running along the bottom and bottom-half of the righthand side, shows Kozue attached to Godai's shoulder. Godai, though, is holding a bowl of rice and a pair of chopsticks, looking up at Kyoko with a concerned expression. Their background shows a field of HINs (poverty kanji in circles).) v3,11 VW2,16 [Kozue comes over to Ikkoku-kan to fix Godai some dinner. Is that jealousy in her eyes? So she then accepts a DATE with Mitaka (she uses that word in referring to Mitaka for the first time). Unfortunately they're to meet at a cafe near a dog parlor, and, well one of the dogs get loose, and well isn't that a compromising position Mitaka finds himself in with that cute poodle barber? We find out that a pissed Kyoko can really play pachinko well. The question is whether she knew she could get money for her earnings, and if she would....] (The first real expression of Kyoko of her irritation at feeling betrayed by men in full bloom, this title page gives Kyoko looking over her shoulder as though she's suddenly turned her head to look back at the reader to give The Look (TM). A dark band runs diagonally from the upper right to lower left in the background.) It doesn't go over very well. I guess Godai's courage is going down the drain. He starts becoming pensive 'cause he's worrying about enough money to eat. School loan??? Kyoko actually starts wondering if being alone for the rest of her life is worth it. Of course, she's inspired by "discussions" with others, but there's too much for me to translate right now.] (Another multi-way split-screen title page. Godai's looking off to the right, while Mitaka's tossing a tennis ball, looking to the left. In between them, Kyoko's staring at the "camera." i.e. none of them are looking at the others.) v4,3 VW3,2 [Some more memories of Souichirou and Souichirou. But Kentarou loses Souichirou. Taihen!! One of the memories shows Souichirou-san walking with the dog following him they're walking up a hill, and the late-afternoon sun is in the eyes of Kyoko, who is running to catch up as she calls out to him. At the end, Godai is the one, naturally, who finds Souichirou, and is walking along a hill towards the late-afternoon sun, when Kyoko calls out "Souichirou" and he turns....] (Title page shows Souichirou silhouetted by the sun in a partly-cloudy sky. Underneath, Kyoko's looking up towards the doggy-sun.) Actually, in the manga version, it looks like the dog paws at Souichirou's geta, which eventually brings tears to Kyoko's eyes as she tells the dog that his master won't be around anymore. The animated version wasn't so bad. [ Harold Ancell: You're right, I read too much into it the first time I looked at it. I still think Takahashi did a better job; the fallen geta in the foreground adds to the impact of that scene. ] Poor Godai: Godai: [thinking, while walking with Kyoko] sekkaku mitsuketa no ni ... (Kyoko vaguely thanked him for finding Souichirou.) v4,4 VW3,3 [Godai and Sakamoto work part-time at a beer garden. The loon squad finds out soon enough and is there in short order. Sakamoto gets his first glimpse at the squad. Towards the end, Kyoko tells Godai he should stand up to the loonies, but then says leave it all to his big sister. Yes, she's drunk by now. After that, Godai has to give Kyoko a lift home (literally) and when she wakes up from her druken stupor on Godai's back and finds out that he paid for the squad's drinking, she gets a little ornery.] When Kyoko starts "riding" Godai on the last page, I can really feel for the sap. My nephew's done the same thing to me, and it can become kinda hard to breathe. B-) (Horizontally-split title page with the loon squad and Kyoko toasting those beer jokki in one scene while below Godai works hard as a beer jockey in the beer garden.) v4,5 VW3,4 [Godai receives a yukata from his baachan, and he's happy 'cause now he can go with Kyoko to the summer festival in full regalia. Unfortunately, both Kozue (in HER yukata) and Mitaka (for some reason in plain clothes) also show up. The inevitable pairing occurs, and our couples go off to rather secluded and dark areas, where were it not for some fireworks, we might have seen some kissing. Guess who was peeping.... Godai shouldn't daydream and end up staring at Kyoko's bosom when she's wielding a scythe.] [ Harold Ancell: He really does have a thing for dangerous sitations while indisposed. One of the curses he bears in this corner of the Takahashi universe, akin to the ever plentiful water in Ranma 1/2. ] Bob: BTW, it's kinda amusing that just before the fireworks start up in this chapter, both Godai and Kyoko are under kissing attack from their respective partners, Kozue and Mitaka. All are properly embarrassed when the lighting starts up. (A watery scene, with Godai on the outside trying to scoop fish, but his scoop breaking. This is a traditional fair game, where you try to scoop up a fish with a scoop which is presumably made of rice paper and can melt away pretty easily. Each scoop of course costs money. The fish he's after here is Kyoko. Floating to her left are lanterns with the second kanji of NATSU MATSURI (summer festival) partially visible on some. Also floating is the phrase, "NATSU MATSUri sukuene no setsunasaya ....") v4,6 VW3,5 [The "poor Kozue" chapter, in which her friends rib her about not having done ANYTHING with Godai. At the same time Godai's friends rib him for being not getting any. Kozue "shows off" Godai to her friends. Why does Kozue scrawl "TENCHUU" (heaven's (well-deserved) punishment) on a tree that Godai falls onto, thinking he's supposed to kiss her?] [ Harold Ancell: If this isn't a rhetorical question, it's because she didn't scrawl it. In fact, the only interesting entry is this one talking about a postcard received from some woman. It must be spring again. Guess what argument pops up again. This time, children are included, because one of Kyoko's parents' friends brought his grandson. He makes up an audio answer himself, but also decides to do the same thing for Kyouko, and pours out his heart onto the tape (grosssss). I hope he doesn't mix up the two tapes.] Yutaka: Let's hope not, since both Kanrinin-san's and the little girl's names are Kyoko ^_^. (Another filler: this time Ichinose is drunk and angry and carrying a sake bottle, yelling at someone, while Yotsuya in his yukata is observing from behind. The title page for this chapter shows Godai smiling down at Kyouko, who's peering back at him. An arrow drawn in crayon, with a curly stem, is seen behind them.) Asuna, meanwhile, is starting to fall more and more in love with Mitaka. Mitaka and Kyouko decide to meet at his place for the Big Discussion. Fortunately for Godai, Salad-chan has once again gotten away from her mistress, who along with Godai has managed to find themselves outside Mitaka's apartment building at just this right time. I wonder if it's possible for Salad-chan to follow Kyouko into Mitaka's apartment...?] (Another filler, this time from v10c8p176 panel 3. Asuna has just arrived at "Lady M" with her dogs, hoping to ask Kyouko, who's there to accept Mitaka's proposal, to break up with Mitaka. The title page shows one of the tennis club ladies walking between a court and the ever-familiar fence. To her right are two tennis racquets besides the bench. Closer to the reader is a fourth lady tying her right shoe, and half-visible at the bottom of the page is a fifth, holding her racquet and looking towards her right. There is a box, half-full of tennis balls, and there are tennis balls strewn around. A racquet can be "heard" (pako--n, in katakana) striking a ball.) v11,1 VW7,12 The Door That Was Closed 閉じられた扉 [Godai is in shock, after having seen Mitaka, in his robe, on top of Kyouko in his apartment last chapter. (One is left wondering why Mitaka would leave his door open to let Godai do this....) Kozue, however, seems happy for Mitaka and Kyouko. Thank heavens for the kids at the daycare center. Godai really shouldn't be brave about this, saying things like "anata no koto ... nan to mo OMOtte imasen kara ..." ((because) I haven't been thinking about you).] Yutaka: Maybe 'I don't think anything of you'? (The title page shows Kyouko standing outside Godai's closed door (visible as a reflection on the window behind Kyouko). Her expression is very sad.) {BTW, two notes for the title of VW7,11 and VW7,12: there are furigana for TOBIRA in both, but in VW7,11, the furigana are "doa" in katakana, whereas for this chapter it's "tobira" in hiragana. Also, I strongly disagree with the current translations since the ??? form of "to be open" and the potential form of "to close" were used: "Akareta TOBIRA " and "TOjirareta TOBIRA ."} Yutaka: I don't see anything wrong with the translations, but then I never learned Japanese grammar ;_;. But like you said, why is the first one 'door', and the next one 'tobira'? Anyone? Godai of course gives chase, but he's several hours behind. What or who could possibly slow Kyouko down long enough so that they can take the same train together? And why is it that Mitaka sent a letter of apology to Kyouko without even mentioning a proposal? Could it have something to do with that teeny-tiny pup running around his apartment?] (The title page shows Kyouko carrying a piece of luggage (more like a bag) in her left hand while running her other hand through her hair. She's looking towards her right. Behind her are waves?) v11,3 VW7,14 同行二人 [After having unknowingly ridden the train up to Kanazawa with Kyouko, Godai is out looking for her. Godai's back to daydreaming again. Worse, I hope she doesn't pay him and then the loon squad spend it all enkai-ing.] (Filler again: Godai smiling, walking with a bag of groceries. On the following page, we have a bust of Yagami in school uniform, looking almost sideways at the reader. If we take the title page and filler together, it appears as though Yagami might be looking at Godai. She seems a bit sad.) v11,7 VW8,2 Chart Method Love チャート式恋愛 [Having successfully "convinced" Godai to tutor her, with a bit of help from the loon squad, Yagami is busy with her sensei. Kyouko does not look a *bit* happy. However, neither is Yagami, since between the partying of the squad and the barely contained irritation and anger of Kyouko, she can't study at Ikkoku-kan. So, why not at her house? Her parents will be there, right? It also seems like Kyouko has some empathic link to Yagami, as well as Godai....] (Filler: the three loonies are sitting in a triangle, Yotsuya facing to the reader's right, Ichinose to the left, and Akemi between the two, holding a cigarette and facing the reader. B-) Basically, in most of the American homes I've been to, it's atypical to take your shoes off at the front door, or the front parlor, or whatever. Of course, this varies from family to family. But unless the shoes are obviously dirty, there's no problem with leaving them on inside the house. What about in other countries/cultures? Tarigan: According to my Mom (who has lived in Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Australia and Canada): All oriental cultures, including Japanese, adhere to the custom of leaving one's shoes at the door. Being out of the house automatically makes a shoe dirty, so it is ridiculous to bring it onto the clean floor. I'm not too sure how accurate her statement is because I've known a Filipino friend and Chinese friend, both of whom let me to wear my shoes inside their homes (on the carpet). At my house, I would never let anyone wear their shoes on our carpet. We have something similar to a genkan (it's a tiled floor) from which you walk up six steps to the carpeted main floor. The title page shows Kyouko with the broom inserted through the spaces between her back and her arms. Her hands are behind her behind, her left one presumably holding the dustpan. She's looking towards the form of Yagami who, in school uniform, is running down a panel. Flying all around are leaves.) v11,10 VW8,5 [Dizzyness] めまい [Yagami, pissed that she's been taken to task for her academic drop, studies herself into the ground, until her grades pull up. She then shows her latest test scores to Kyouko, and Godai returns just in time for her to collapse in his arms. Godai has to decide again: Kyouko or Yagami! "hakkiri (katakana) shinasai yo, hakkiri (katakana)." ("Decide, dammit, decide!")] (The title page shows a head shot of Kyouko, looking slightly up. As far as the reader can tell, she has no clothes on.) v11,11 VW8,6 Weakling 弱虫 [It's Christmas Party time at Chachamaru, with a new addition: Yagami. Kyouko wants to present Godai a nice sweater which turns out to be identical to the one she wears on the title page. However, Godai is late because the nursery school is going out for drinks, so Yagami takes the time to alternately tease and berate Kyouko for not admitting she loves Godai. She uses the word "yowamushi" (weakling) a few times. ] Tarigan: By the way, that homeroom teacher has a name-- it's Kamiogi-sensei. I'm not sure if it was ever mentioned in the manga, but you can probably find it in the ending credits of the anime version. Continuation of the synopsis: At the end of the chapter, the homeroom teacher comments that Yagami is still seeing Godai. Yagami counters that her grades aren't slipping so there shouldn't be a problem there. Then they go off on a conversation about Kyoko's feelings for her dead husband. After that, Yagami feels a bit sorry for Kyoko, so she drops by Ikkoku-kan. She sees Kyoko coming back from shopping, then runs past Kyoko, calling her, "Yowamushi!" Bob: BTW, does it really snow this much in Tokyo? Tarigan: This chapter is notable in that it's the *last time* Yagami ever sees Kyoko or Godai. I thought it was a terribly weak way for her to go. How could it have been improved? Bob: Agreed, but I think she had served her purpose by then, kinda like Nikaido. I suppose there might be other ways to use her, but then this might veer away from the comedic series that it is. (Kind of the way it does in v13-15. B-) (The filler's back: this one shows Souichirou walking on his own. Must be scenting yakitori. On the title page, Kyouko is standing in front of a bay window, wearing an oversized sweater and leggings, and not much else. I don't know any French, but sounds like a French word. Tony Danh Cong Luu says: Pate, accent on the "e", is a type of grounded liver mixed with a variety of grounded meats. Godai finally figures out why, but then Kozue pulls him away, to tell him about the proposal. In an effort to end the relationship amicably, he tries to tell her about his feelings for Kyouko. So he uses a tried-and-true method: he proposes to Kozue! Boy, wait until Kyouko finds out!] {There's a filler page, panel 1 from page 24, v14c1. Kyouko wanders back to ChaChaMaru, where Akemi starts in on her in the first of several encounters where she forces Kyouko to acknowledge her feelings for Godai. "Atashi GODAIkun to NEchao--ka na--." ("How about I sleep with Godai?") She's only joking, right?] {The title page shows Godai in his Cabaret Babysitter Suit, looking like an aloof playboy, with his arm wrapped around Akemi, who is wearing but lingerie. She, along with part of Godai, is lightly drawn, as though she were a ghost and Godai a partial spectre.} v14,9 VW10,4 ラブホテル事情 [Having run into Kozue and her pals outside the love hotel where he rescued Akemi, Godai is rather nonplussed. Naturally the Loon Squad tease him; adding to his misery is the fact that he believes he's in the dog house with two women simultaneously. On the other hand, by page 183, he has kissed three women in the space of 120 pages. Kyouko meanwhile has decided to return to Ikkoku-kan and give Godai another chance. All she needs to do is avoid talking to Kozue....] {Just Kyouko's bust is visible. She looks sadly towards the reader, as her hair ribbon unravels in the wind, allowing her hair to start billowing.} v14,10 VW10,5 好きだから… [Akemi verifies Kozue's story. Kyouko's mad again. She's looking down at Godai who is, appropriately, on his hands and knees crawling down the floor and looking up at her with an expression of absolute guilt.} [Okay, just when is Godai going to propose? No time soon if the partying loon squad can't be there. And Kyouko's kept waiting. Just remember what I said about Kyouko's stares, Godai! (See v14c8. Kowai!)] [ Yutaka says: I realized that this is where Akane's stare (in Ranma) originally came from, also ^_^. ] v15,5 VW10,11 不幸な人々 {Kyouko sits on a lounge chair at a cafe called "Coffee Doelle" with her right hand holding the handle of a teacup, which is on a saucer on top of the table in front of her. She's staring over the reader's left shoulder. Her sweater has a tiny hat design on it. Behind her, on a shelf, is a flower basket shaped like a chariot. The flowers might be kiri (paulownia).} [ Yutaka says: Wow, and I don't even know what a kiri or a paulownia is. ] [Godai goes job-hunting. (Need to be able to support that wife!) No problem right? He's far more qualified than that other guy .... We find out that Sayoko married the puppet club president.] v15,6 VW10,12 I Won't Permit It 許さん [Kyouko's father's sick and in bed at home. Kyouko's mother is guessing that Kyouko might marry Godai, which doesn't help his disposition, especially when Kyouko basically confirms it. In any case, Godai has to figure out how to propose, which may take longer than it did to get his first kiss from Kyouko.] {Kyouko is resting her head on her partially closed hands, staring at the reader. It's almost a pose.} [ Yutaka says: One of my most favorite drawings ^_^; ] v15,7 VW10,13 Promise 約束 [Kyouko's father has escaped from the hospital. Something about not wanting to see Kyouko's tears again. Godai has much the same sentiments. Also something about, when Kyouko grows up, her husband should give her father a piggy-back ride....] {A scene from long ago: Kyouko's father carrying on his back a very young Kyouko. His shadow stretches off to the right.} v15,8 VW10,14 形見 [Well, now that the proposal's out of the way, and Kyouko's parents have accepted it, it's time to check with Godai's parents. Well, that is, after Kyouko and Godai help out a bit at "Godai's."] {The title page shows a picture of a young Godai about to start eating a yam(?). It's summer, and his grandmother is fanning him. Both are sitting on a porch.} [ Yutaka says: That's an eggplant, and he's not eating it. Rather, he's making a horse (or some other four-legged animal, I guess). He has a matchbox in front of him, and he's using matches to make the legs. ] v15,9 VW10,15 Under the Cherry Trees 桜の下で [Time to say goodbye to Souichirou. Can Kyouko do it? Another touching scene by Takahashi!] {Kyouko is wearing a spring dress and has her hands out as if holding a large invisible ball. Her eyes are closed and her head is slightly bowed. The wind is blowing her hair, as cherry petals float all around.} v15,10 VW10,16 P.S. Ikkoku-kan P.S.一刻館 {The title page shows the front porch of Ikkoku-kan. Souichirou-san is barking at the broom, which is leaning against the door. It is morning, by the shadows.} [ Yutaka says: Minor point, but it looks like he's just yawning ^_^. ] [The wedding! We also see a few faces not seen in awhile: Kentarou, Mitaka and co., Ikuko. Plus a quick run-down of what happens to the gang in the near future. Sayounara, Ikkoku-kan. O-shiawase ni.] [ Yutaka says: Yagami doesn't look as cute with that hairstyle!! ;_; ] <.7. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ By Glenn Tarigan: v4c1 VW2c17: Kyoko's mother meets Mitaka for the first time, and she goes with Godai and Ichinose for a talk at a cafe. At the tennis court, Mitaka tries to talk with Kyoko. She confronts him with the news that she saw him hugging another woman. Then Kyoko's dad visits Ikkoku-kan and meets Godai. They end up drinking out together. Kyoko has to come help escort her father home. Finally, it seems that Kyoko's decided she's had it with men. But in later scenes she notices Godai turning down Kozue's invitations for dinner, and Mitaka asks her out for a date. So maybe they didn't dump her after all. On the final page, Godai arrives home and sees Kyoko at the entrance. They exchange smiles. (The two chapters which I've described above seem to be good candidates for making long synopses. They weren't in the anime version, but they aren't really good enough to warrant a detailed translation.
