I sure have. I have some different theories. Here's my Oliver Stone list. 1. He's enrolled full-time in a hentai support group. 2. He's a North Korean spy. 3. He's a yakuza wiseguy. 4. His job is to test security at porno shops. (early episode) 5. He's in a witness protection program. Ikkoku-kan is his safehouse. 6. He's engaged in high-powered corporate espionage. 7. He's Mrs. Ichinose's gigolo. (gomen nasai to fans of Mrs. Ichinose) 8. He secretly runs an establishment named "Yotsuya-san's Dojo of Love." 9. He runs a firm named "Yotsuya-san, Pet Detective." 10. He surfs the Internet all damn day! 11. Hard-core partier at night, crimefigthing superhero by day! 12. He's still trying to figure out who killed JFK. 13. He's the creative genius behind Dave Letterman's Top Ten lists. 14. He's in the product testing department at Hentai Toys, Inc. 15. He rehearses to perfection his Ikkoku-kan party antics. 16. He gets a haircut every hour, on the hour. 17. He's a roadie for AC/DC. 18. Always looking for Streisand tickets. 19. He charts the wanderings of Hibiki Ryouga. 20. HE SECRETLY ADMINISTERS THIS NEWSGROUP!! Feel free to add to this list if you have additional ideas about Yotsuya. Pardon my theft of thunder, but I AM aware of the fact that he is just a manga/anime character. This posting is offered in a spirit of fun and to flame this would be supremely ridiculous. } The above was posted late in the summer and got at least eight or nine responses, some of them contributing cool new ideas. Thing is, I didn't think to save them in my account to officially add to the list, and so I'll have to remember as best I can. (Oops, I pulled a Godai.) Items with a * are the proposed additions from r.a.a as I remember them. *21. He's a drug dealer. (Hey, not my idea!) *22. He's an Immortal (seen "Highlander"?). The picture of his family in which all look remarkably alike... well, it's doctored. It's part of his long-term cover. He awaits the momentous Gathering through the long centuries and has been living at Ikkoku-kan since its erection. (since it was built, NOT since Godai!) And now for a couple more of my own! 23. He is a ninja sorceror. ( ooh, such badness... ) 24. He's Happosai's parole officer. ( A busy man, neh? ) And for something I picked up from the MI Guide: 25. Yotsuya-san is a ghost. ( Yotsuya Kaidan (?) ) Let your imagination soar! Please, feel absolutely free to contribute to this scholarly compilation! ;) Shucks, if only I could remember more of the r.a.a responses. 26. Our man Yotsuya is the little-known Third Blues Brother. Note his attire and musical talents and that he is at least as quirky as brothers Jake & Elwood. He can also dance. He also has amazing specialized talents. BTW, how is "Blues Brothers" depicted in kana? If Jake likes to order a Coke with his whole fried chicken and Elwood likes nothing but toasted white bread, then what would our pal Yotsuya order? What does he like? Hmmmm, food for scholarly discourse... 27. Secretly, our man Yotsuya is a masked professional wrestler. With his valiant partner, Hurricane Hanae, they absolutely rock the world of daytime, mixed-doubles, tag team wrestling. (What? You've never heard of it?) (C'mon, nowadays, everybody needs a day job.) 28. I always thought that he was a rubber band salesman. (contributed by Doug Eckhart, 94/9/28) 29. Our hero Yotsuya is president of the Tokeizaka chapter of the Richard M. Nixon fan club. (Hey, he's got the hairstyle, the expertise in covert operations, and the intense personal charm requisite for such an exalted position.) ----------------- From: Ramon Herrera Date: Mon, 10 Oct 1994 09:11:13 -0500 (CDT) 30. Little known fact: Yotsuya is in reality the exiled black sheep of the powerful Mendo family. In a bitter struggle for control of the Mendo fortune, younger brother Shutaro chased Yotsuya away, but his sister Ryoko continues to give him money, secretly handed over to him at the corner newsstand. (contributed by Jerry Wright, 94/10/03) (If you don't already know, Mendo Shutaro is the wealthy, arrogant rival of Moroboshi Ataru in "Urusei Yatsura." Mendo Ryoko is his demure yet oddly eccentric sister who enjoys playing bizarre practical jokes. Put the two Mendos together, take away the wealth and fame, and you've got Yotsuya.) - J.W. From: "Steven Miale" Date: Mon, 10 Oct 1994 10:07:07 -0500 About him being a 'blues brother'... >what would our pal Yotsuya order? This is a list in an of itself! 1. Roasted squid 2. An egg 3. He would try and eat other people's food. And perhaps the various deluxe dinners that he always blackmails Godai for. Steve Steven Miale on 94.10.12 says: Easy - he's the tofu salesman! Christopher Noe on 94.10.12 says: I think he is the former president of the Carl Macek fan club, and is now in hiding after threats on his life. From: "Harold Ancell" Date: Wed, 12 Oct 94 20:58:24 -0400 Steven Miale >Easy - he's the tofu salesman! Nah, I'm pretty sure we see him at the same time we hear the tofu pipe. My theory, especially for the anime version, is that Yotsuya is a force of nature, a spirit of the MI building, or something to that effect. Notice, for example, when Kyouko was late coming back from her first date with Mitaka, Godai tossed his clock out the window, and Yotsuya immediately handed it back to him, saying "Godai-kun, you mustn't run away from reality." Assume that he really was in all the pictures in the album found by Kentaro. And there are a number of other examples. - Harold From: Ramon Herrera Date: Wed, 18 Jan 1995 21:05:31 -0600 (CST) Subject: =MI= Yotsuya Today, 1..10 When a story ends, do you ever wonder what happens to some of the characters? Well, I sure do. I've so far compiled a list of 32 different possibilities concerning what Yotsuya-san does with his time, occupationally and otherwise. Now here's the beginning of a list about what he may have been doing since MI came to an end. 1. He went to law school, passed the bar, and is a partner in Tendo, Yotsuya & Matlock, Attorneys At Law. 2. He's playing big-time baseball (in Japan, of course) and is leading the league in stolen bases. (What? I didn't even see him go by!) 3. He's since moved to Corpus Christi, Texas, where he has studied diligently and has become THE FIST OF THE LONE STAR! 4. (From: Samuel Lysinger ) To add to the list of who Yotsuya really is, I think he's Masamune Shirow ^_^ 5. He's since moved to New York City, where he has moved in with another (in)famous and renowned one-named apartment dweller, KRAMER! Hmmmm... J. Seinfeld (unconfirmed) - What's the deal with this Yotsuya guy? 6. He's next in line to challenge the Energizer Bunny on behalf of Supervolt Batteries. Noting the failure of Lord Vader, he plans to use The Dark Side of the Schwartz instead. (Ah, my Schwartz is bigger than yours!) 7. Being the point-man for a Conehead invasion, he has set his sinister plans into motion. Willing to sacrifice himself for his native planet, he has been cosmetically attenuated by means of a cranial cloaking device. Note his prodigious ability to put away food and drink. (Godai-kun, would you like some nice chewing gum?) 8. Our man of the hour (happy hour, of course) Yotsuya Addams has rejoined his family and now lives with his cousins Gomez and Fester. (MAMUSHKA!) 9. Having honed his skills, Yotsuya is now a full-fledged member of the Q Continuum. (INTRUDER ALERT!! SECURITY TO TEN-FORWARD!!) 10. Can you say MIGHTY MOOCHIN' PARTY RANGERS? (POWER UP, PARTY RANGERS!) By the way, could his first name be Cosmo? (GO GO PARTY RANGERS!) 11. He's the next surprise witness in the unfolding O.J. drama. (Not that I pay particular attention to it.) -------------------------------------------- Subject: =MI= Maison Ikkoku is so *violent*!! I wonder if anyone has > figured out how many times Godai manages to hurt himself while > daydreaming about Kyoko? Hey, I wrote such a list almost a year ago... in my Esperanto MI Guidebook, that is. Unfortunately, that was before I had seen the whole anime series, so my list has one or two gaps. I'll translate what's there, at any rate. Episode 2: Kyoko confesses that she's also in love with Godai -> He runs face first into the glass door of the jewelry shop. 4: Kyoko offers a kiss to congratulate Godai on his exam success -> He walks into a utility pole. 16: Godai gives roses to a grateful Kyoko -> He walks into a utility pole. 18: Godai gives the broach to Kyoko and they almost kiss -> He walks into a utility pole. 19: He takes advantage of Kyoko, once Akemi has been removed -> He falls into a public bath. (This is probably not violent enough...) 20: He and Kyoko run towards each other through the snow -> He bicycles into a utility pole. 24: Imagines married life with Kyoko, and gets randy in the morning -> His forehead crashes into his mirror. In the manga, there are a few others. I might try to list them sometime, but anyone else is welcome to do it. Doug Eckhart on 94.12.28 says: It seems that near the beginning of the series he was hurting himself at least once per episode. It became a regular theme to have him running into telephone poles on the way home. The only other incidents that I remember specifically were the times when he went home and got two black eyes. The first black eye was while playing football or rugby (or some sport), he was daydreaming that Kyoko would think he was so manly for scoring a goal, and he ran into the goal post. Later he was delivering food on his bicycle and got to daydreaming about Kyoko being worried about him and crashed in to a Utility pole... I'm sure that there are a lot more, I just can't think of them all right now, it's been a long time since I watched MI! I should watch some tonight to catch up. From: jjshen@amhux3.amherst.edu (Jeffrey Shen) Subject: Daydreams... Date: Tue, 14 Mar 1995 23:47:46 -0500 (EST) We all know that Godai-san daydreams about the Kanrinrin-san almost constantly. Often with the subsequent crash-into-pole/door/etc (tm) comic effect. I was just wondering though- how many times does the reverse happen? Does Kyoko-san ever daydream about getting together with Godai-san? If so, how many times? The only instance I've come across so far of the event was in the latest issue of Maison Ikkoku. Here, Kyoko was dreaming of kissing Godai for a change (geez, it took long enough :P). Of course, no such incident has occured in the anime episodes that I've seen so far. The episode corresponding to this manga issue completely chopped out the glass shattering/dream/etc and focused more on Akemi. Will we get a better glimpse of Kyoko's mind in the future? Maison Ikkoku Drinking Game --------------------------- by Steven Miale on 94.12.29 - Kyoko is sweeping - two if not outside Ikkoku-kan - Kyoko slaps Godai - Godai gets upset at someone - Yotsuya says something weird - Yotsuya gets a dinner out of Godai - Mitaka is scared by a dog - two if it is Souichiro-san - otherwise, one per dog (Asuna episodes = severe inebriation!) - Godai daydreams about Kyoko - two if he gets hurt while doing so - Kyoko has Souichiro-san flashbacks - two if we see part of his face - Yagami shows up at Ikkoku-kan - two if she tries to sleep in Godai's room - three if she does - Kozue tries to get Godai to kiss her - Kozue forces Godai to do something - Kyoko gets jealous - Yotsuya/Ichinose/Akemi are having a party - two if in Godai's room - three if costumed - Kyoko's parents try to get her to marry again - Godai's grandmother shows up - two if she plays cupid - Godai refers to Kyoko as 'Kyoko-san' - two if he is talking to her at the time - Mitaka acts macho - two if Godai acts macho - Mitaka's teeth shine - two if someone else's teeth shine - three if they shine more - Kyoko and Godai are alone - two if they almost kiss - three if they are interrupted - Yagami makes a pass at Godai - Yagami refers to Kyoko as "the widow" - Souichiro-san (dog) acts like Souichiro-san (man) would have - Someone proposes to Kyoko - two if she ignores the question or never answers - three if she says no - whole bottle if she says yes - Godai and Mitaka fight over Kyoko Doug Eckhart comments: Why not make it easy... just drink every time that they do... :-) Especially during some of the early episodes where Godai is trying to study, this will add up to quite a bit of drinking. :-) ================================================================= @references == Maison Ikkoku References and Injokes == == or "The Sincerest Forms of Flattery (Will Take You Everywhere)" == ============================================================================= By way of Urusei Yatsura: ------------------------- Williamson: (on 94.02.27) I was watching Urusei Yatsura movie 2: Beautiful Dreamer earlier tonight, and sitting through the credits at the end, when my eyes bugged out because of something that just kind of slipped past: At the end of the "Assistant Animators" credits, one of the names listed is "Godai Yuusaku". Both in the subtitled English and the appropriate Kanji. Admittedly, the movie was released in 1984, but the MI manga had started before then, right? So either this is an elegantly-hidden Takahashi in-joke, or someone in animation actually had the name of our favorite story's protagonist. (94.03.09) In Urusei Yatsura Movie #4 "Lum the Forever", there is a scene later in the film where Mendou is making an impassioned speech to the student body of Tomobiki High. Some of the students shout questions at him, and as they show the audience, look in the upper right of your screen for a familiar dark-haired lass with a "Piyo Piyo" apron. Next to her, nose buried in a textbook, is someone who seems to be Godai. Steven Krietz: (93.03.10) I remember in the 3rd UY movie, you can see Godai and Kyoko walking to the circus in the opening (the large crowd scene, about the left side.). They are drawn in the manga style too. (I think Akemi and Ichinose was in there too...) Also, in the later manga chapters of UY, you can constantly find posters of Kyoko in Moboroshi's bedroom. I remember in one chapter, (have to find out) Ataru is reading a Maison Ikkoku tankobon (I forget which one). [ Jerry Wright on 94.12.05 adds: The UY chapter is "Oobin Kobin" (Big Bottle Little Bottle*). Volume 12, Part 7 of the UY wideban. The front cover of Ataru's tankoban shows Kyoko and part of the title (Mezon...). On the back cover is Souichiro-san. We also get to see a few panels of the manga (an exchange between Godai and Kyoko), but the text is too small (for me) to read. *That would be 大ビン小ビン in new JIS. ] Christopher J. Noe on 94.07.20: Here are a couple from the Urusei Yatsura TV series. In episode 44, story 67 "After You've Gone" - Ten-chan and Lum leave earth to renew their alien registration permits [this pun actually works in english, too]. While Lum is finishing her paperwork, Ten-chan is seen in the background reading a volume of manga. On the cover is a young woman and a familiar looking white dog. Anyone we know??? In episode 46, story 69 "Lunchtime Eat-Out'ers, Gather Around!" - The teachers at the high school decide to crack down on the students who sneak off campus to eat lunch (in their school uniforms). During one of the chase scenes, some of the students run by a sidewalk cafe. Seated at one of the tables are grandfather Otonashi and Ikuko Otonashi. This episode features visual references to a number of other manga, anime, and U.S. comics characters, as well. "C.H. YUNG" <100267.306@compuserve.com> on 94.10.05: In episode 197 story 218 (the last episode), during the second last time of LUM electrify Ataru, you can see Kyoko wearing her usual outfits sweeping the floor from right to left of the screen using her famous bamboo sweeper !!!!! ^_^ Gerald Wright on 94.10.13 says: Sorry for the noise. A while ago, someone on this list asked if "Piyo Piyo" ever appeared in UY. Last night, I noticed in the UY manga "Aa, KOdomo no HI wa KYOUFU ja" (sorry if I mangled the title) that one of the monsters is wearing a "Piyo Piyo" bib! It's on p224 of V4, Part 14 of the larger UY manga compilation. From: Jeff D. Williamson Date: Tue, 18 Apr 1995 08:40:39 -0500 (CDT) I finally found Takahashi-sensei's Maison Ikkoku (self-)parody in the Urusei Yatsura manga! Wideban Volume 13, Parts 23 and 24, "Otona no Koi no Monogatari" ("The Tale of the Maiden's Love"). The setup: a young woman, recently widowed, has nothing left to her except a white dog (who goes "Bau" with the best of them) named "Sentaro-san". Sentaro-san then dies in a tragic surfing accident. The woman (Okami-san) is despondent and hesitant to remarry, until she meets Ryuunousuke's father, who bears a strong resemblance to...Sentaro-san?!? This is a FUNNY story, including a classic scene with Okami, Ataru, Shinobu, and Mendou, each taking the last syllable of the last speaker and coming up with something almost completely unrelated...a joke which I don't envy Viz the translation efforts. ^_^ Jeff D. Williamson on Fri, 21 Apr 1995: Regard the Urusei Yatsura OAV, "Inaba the Dreammaker". In the future where Sakura and Tsubame are married and have children, the two of them bear a remarkable resemblance (in the animated version) to Kyoko and Godai... Doug Eckhart: Well, I'd say that about 50% of all the female characters that Takahashi draws look like Kyouko, and a good deal of the male characters resemble Godai. Akane's face seems to pop up a lot too... :-) I don't know if I've seen that particular OVA, but it could be a coincidence... Jeff D. Williamson on Fri, 21 Apr 1995: In the manga version, the resemblance is also there! Takahashi-sensei must have intended the comparison. There's even a scene where Sakura is wearing an apron and sweeping the walk in front of their home. Doug Eckhart: Well, if she was wearing an apron and sweaping the walkway... Did the apron say Piyo Piyo? By way of Ranma 1/2: -------------------- Tarigan: Vol 7, page 94, panel 2 Not for the last time, you can see the PIYO PIYO design (a reference to Kyoko's apron in Maison Ikkoku) here: it's on the panty of the right-most girl of this panel. Vol 9, page 9, panel 1 Kunou is wearing a bib with that familiar chick and the "piyo piyo" caption. From: eeyore Date: Fri, 21 Apr 1995 17:01:16 +0100 (BST) There does appear to be a lot of cross-fertilisation between Takahashi's works. In one of the earlier "Happosai" episodes in the Ranma manga, one of the girls who Happosai lifts the skirts of has "Piyo Piyo" on her knickers! (Ranma 1/2, vol. 7, part 6). Just a normal sukebe ^_^ to spot these things! Andrew Chen on 94.07.18: I took a break from translating to read an old volume of Ranma 1/2, and noticed that in Volume 2, part 8, 6th page the panda is wearing a bib with "PIYO" and a chick printed on it. I'm sure there must be more cross-references between Takahashi-sama's many works. Anyone know of others? From: jjshen@amhux3.amherst.edu (Jeffrey Shen) Date: Fri, 21 Apr 1995 01:06:41 -0400 (EDT) I just saw the first tape of the Viz dubbed Nethaohen series, "darling charlette" or something or other. Is it me, or was Godai and Sakamoto sitting on the sidelines for Mikado and Asuza's school? And is that Ataru who is sitting on the other side for Furinken high (Is Lum in the picture somewhere)? Just wondering if my eyes haven't gone out on me... :P Miscellaneous Sources: ---------------------- Dirty Pair: Sim Hell Issue #4, page 4, panel 3 "Kei-oko" is wearing an apron just like one that Kyoko owns. From: Ta Niu Date: Sat, 7 Jan 1995 03:45:38 GMT-8 Subject: Sesame Street - Maison Ikkoku connection? I was just digging some of my old manga stuff, when I came across some issues of Izumi Matsumoto's Sesame Street. Going through it again, I find some suspicious similarities between Sesame Street and Maison Ikkoku. A young widow who lost her husband shortly after marriage? A big, shaggy dog? Even the dead husband's spectacles look like they belonged to Souchirou-san. Hmm, would Sesame Street be some sort of tribute by Matsumoto-san towards Maison Ikkoku? I realize that these observations must have been pointed out in this mailing list a long time ago, but a newbie acts like a newbie must! :) --------- Tam Ha on Thu, 16 Mar 95: Subject: International Channel I have a question about this show on the International Channel. This show airs at 11:00pm EST. Here's a story of a night I had. It was like every other night (dark outside) and I was brushing my teeth in the bathroom when I heard a music clip from RKa room and the living room from the upstairs bathroom. Plus I had the CD player running one of my MI Music Blend discs so naturally I thought it came from there. Well, I went back to my room to discover the door closed and when I went in, it was playing some other track on the disc and not the above. RHow I hear it?S, I wondered. Hm... the suspense is building... Anyway, I go back to the bathroom and hear it yet AGAIN. RHuh...?S I said to myself. It seems to be comming from downstairs. Haha! No way! My mom doesnUt watch anim and there is no way sheUd go through my tapes looking for Maison Ikkoku to watch it. In fact, she complains about it. RArenUt you old enough? You still watchinU cartoons?S goez her everytime I watch anything. Anyways, I go downstairs and Tlo and behold! Guess what? It was playing from the TV set! Wow! How special! But there was no anime on... only this cruddy quality picture of an live action soap or something. Can this be the Maison Ikkoku Live Action TV Movie?! No! ItUs something else! Guess what! I have no idea! ThatUs why IUm writing this! To make a long, run-on, mispelld story short, IUm asking what is this? This certainly isnUt on the MI-Guide. Is it just some cheap Chinese movie with rip-off music or what? I know I'll get flamed for that last line but hear me out. I'm Chinese too. I just really resent that they seem to like to take other people's ideas and copy it freely and try to sell it for a profit. Or is that my imagination? Hm... I just noticed that ASCII doesn't like certain Mac characters very well. Sorry about this... I was doing this on MSWord to save time online... (duh). Sorry for mine badded grammer and spellink misteaks. --- Dennis Supachana on Sat, 18 Mar 1995 To: Tam Ha I think I saw the same show! It was actually two weeks ago when I saw it. I was flipping through the channels looking for some Japanese TV to watch (I don't really speak or understand it, but sometimes they're fun to watch anyways.) All of a sudden I hear the familiar tune of a MI BGM. I too thought that I had found the MI Live action movie on TV. After watching it for a while I realized it wasn't but still couldn't understand why they would be playing MI on a chinese program. Oh, well just thought I'd toss my two yen in. --- Ta Niu on Sun, 19 Mar 1995: Err, I think I know what's going on. You see, sometimes Chinese programs [the ones I saw were from Hong Kong], wouln't bother with creating their own soundtrack, and would use the music from other sources, like Movie Soundtracks [Dances With Wolves and The Untouchables has been a favourite at some point in the past...] and also Anime BGMS. I have heard Laputa's and Macross' BGMs being played in some Hong Kong drama serials [can't remember which] which had nothing at all to do with the Animes. I think that must be what you experienced...[gee, they're using MI now...? But the soundtrack would really be suitable for those soap operaish drama serials now, wouldn't it?] Jaa ne. --- Ch Yung on Mon, 20 Mar 1995 Fyi, many many Chinese movies and television show produced in Hong Kong uses a lot of Anime's BGC, such as MI, Macross, etc. The most popular one is, of course, MI, due to the varity and quality of the BGC. Also fyi, STAR TV Network ( a satellite network in asia) is now boardcasting MI, starting mid-MAR. STAR TV network can be viewed in the whole asia except China (local Law problem) and northern asia. --- Dennis Supachana on Mon, 20 Mar 1995: The use of Anime BGMs is not limited to Chinese programs either. I was watching a Japanese variety news show last night and they also used an MI BGM during one of their segments! ______________________________________________________________________________ ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ --- End of Maison Ikkoku Guidebook Miscellaneous Notes Copyright 1996 by the Misery Loves Company
